Project Proposal

Introduction:

Gas and oil pipelines are a major source of energy transportation throughout the United States. In New York State, there is an increasing demand for pipelines due to development, the shale boom in Pennsylvania, and demand for improved gas line infrastructure along the New England States. To this day, New York hosts many existing pipelines throughout the state and has been subject to pipeline development proposals. As a result, sensitive habitat has been subject to risk of development or potential contamination if a pipeline were to fail.

Objectives:

-Develop a map of New York State displaying the various pipelines and proposed pipelines

-Display the counties the pipelines run through

-Display watersheds and ecosystems the pipelines run through

-Develop a map showing the pipelines and ecosystems in which they run through

Methodology:

The first step for this project will be to search ArcGIS data online for pipeline and habitat data in New York State. I will add the data to my geodatabase and convert the coordinate systems so that they all align on the map. The data will be added as layers to the map. The data will display the major gas and oil lines in New York and the sensitive ecosystems they run through.

Data:

Most of the data will be derived from ArcGIS databases and some will have to be found online

Deliverables:

-          A map displaying major pipelines in New York State and the ecosystems which they run through

-          A poster displaying the map as well as an assessment on pipeline safety in New York State and potential threats to sensitive ecosystems.
